AR-1. Offered at consignment by a collector in Argentina, this is an incredible late 18th or early 19th Century European (probably French) ivory platter. This truly spectacular work is 23” wide x over 14” across and is deeply relief carved with battle and royal scenes. It certainly depicts a particular historical event, but I don’t know what it is. I DO know it is in superb condition and beautifully carved. These pieces have become so rare, that even at these prices, they are sure to appreciate every year. The price includes CITES Certificate and International 2nd Day Air shipping and insurance to the USA. S, H & I for 2nd day air within the USA will be extra, however, as I’ll want to see it arrives safely before forwarding it to a buyer

6-21. A 19th Century European carving, possibly Dieppe, of Venus, standing beside the famous Venus de Milo statue. Her face it beautiful (often a problem on lesser Euro carvings), and the work is elegantly crafted. Elephant ivory grain is prominently visible, especially on the plinth, adding to its beauty. Excellent condition, with a few mild age lines that actually add to beauty and authenticity of the piece. 7” on the plinth

7-06. A truly superb 19th Century Japanese okimono, carved with Tokyo School skill, of a dancing Oni, flailing a large fan, made of a leaf, over his back. I’ve never seen a finer rendering of an Oni, done with meticulous adherence to the legends of the Oni. He has the proper 2 claw-toed feet and 3 claw fingers. The details to teeth and fangs are incredible. He has inlaid black eyes and jeweled necklace, studded with apparent tiny semi-precious stones. This would be a fabulous addition to any collection, and can only appreciate. 7” tall, in superb condition.

8-12. A very large, beautifully elephant ivory carved rendition of the Chinese Taoist Immortal, HE XIAN GU, 23” tall. She is carrying her signature bouquet of lotus flowers and is wearing the classic Phoenix Bird headdress, a sign of Royalty or a celestial goddess. Beautifully etched black ink highlights and large size makes this fine piece really stand out. No apparent damage or restorations makes this a great buy. Pieces of this size and quality are selling at live auctions for $3,500 or more, PLUS at least 20% buyer’s premiums.

8-13. A large (18”) and very beautiful elephant ivory Chinese carving of a Merin, a celestial beauty, carrying lotus flowers in one hand and a basket of flowers in the other. She is wearing a flowered Phoenix Bird headdress of a goddess. Her serene face is ethereal, and the brown and black highlights to her hair and robes are exquisitely done, making this an outstanding addition to any collection. No apparent damage or restoration, with every flower in perfect condition. Pieces of this size and quality are selling at live auctions for $3,000 or more, PLUS at least 20% buyer’s premiums, so this is a great buy.

8-14. A magnificent, huge elephant ivory Chinese covered vase, 21” tall. This very heavy pieces, is carved in deep relied, with a large and smaller pane on each size. One shows the Emperor and Empress looking out over their gardens. The others depict court royalty and attendants in the palace gardens. The fabulous finial is a fully carved tree, with royal staff below in the garden. Foo Lion heads on either side have traditional rings in their mouths, and dragons surround the base. Terrific details are carved throughout, with inked highlights at the base and neck. This truly gorgeous piece would be the center of any collection. Absolutely no apparent damage or restoration. Smaller vases of lesser quality have sold at live auctions for $4,500 or more, PLUS at least 20% buyer’s premiums. With tax, buyers are pay over $6,000 for a lesser item, so this is a great, once-in-a-lifetime buy, because I bought it a part of this entire collection

8-15. A very large (22”), early 20th Century elephant ivory carving of Quan Yin, the Goddess of Goodness and Mercy. Quan Yin is by far the most popular ivory figurine because she brings good luck to the house, so these command even higher prices than other similar size deities do. Unknowledgeable sellers mislabel many court beauties and other celestial goddesses as Quan Yin. The goddess is depicted with all her usual attributes, carrying a basket of chrysanthemums and a branch in the other hand. A young attendant is at her feet and she is wearing the typical Buddha headdress. Elegant work to her robes and scarves, with inked highlights. She stands on clouds, above a curled dragon. No apparent damage or restoration. This is a wonderful piece that will upgrade any collection. A bargain at:

8-21. A fine, unusually large, 19” Chinese elephant ivory carving of a fisherman, holding his pole, with a fish in his had, one hanging from a stringer, and on e still on the pole. Excellent work on his face and robes, with artistic monochrome highlights. No noticeable damage or restorations on this nice, large piece that will look good in any collection. Good Chinese ivories of this size are regularly bringing in excess of $2,000 at live auctions, + premium.

8-22. A 16” Chinese elephant ivory carving of Taoist Immortal, LU DONG BING, wearing his magic sword (note the Demon face on the hilt) that he uses to combat various evils on earth. Typical headwear and holding a tablet, he is very well carved, without any noticeable damage or restorations. Wonderful attention to detail, including his handsome face and elegant robes with beaded cords hanging from each arm. Nicely done, intricate monochrome highlights to his face and clothing make this larger than average piece a beautiful addition to any collection.

8-23. A fine, large (16”) Chinese elephant ivory carving of the deity, SHOU XIN, another version of Shou Lao. He is the god of long life and the most popular, next to Quan Yin, of all Chinese immortals. This wonderfully carved piece show his benign, happy face, and he is carrying a basket of chrysanthemums and a branch of other flowers. He is often given and displayed at birthdays to bring good luck and long life. Great attention to details and beautifully carved, without apparent damage or restorations. A wonderful addition, good carvings of this deity at this size often bring in excess of $2,500 (+ premium) at live auctions

8-24. An absolutely exquisite 19th century elephant ivory carving of Quan Yin, mounted on a wooden base. This 12” goddess of goodness and mercy is elegantly carved from the top of her head to her toenails, peeking out below her robes. Incredible details to her face, hands and robes, with superbly rendered monochrome highlights. She is holding a peach (symbol of long life) with the typical Buddha hand positions. A truly fine example of Chinese 19th Century craftsmanship and attention to detail, without any apparent damage or restoration on this lovely old piece. Recently, several fine Quan Yin this size sold for $4000! Don’t miss it.

8-27. An older, 15 ½” elephant ivory covered vase, tea stained to give it a darker color. Immortals in tree-lined gardens are depicted in panels on both sides. The tall lid is surmounted by Foo Lions, and is fully reticulated with Foo Lion heads looking out throughout the piece. The neck and base are similarly reticulated, with multiple Foo Lion heads. It is in very good condition, with a few age lines typical of an older piece, but no apparent damage.

8-28. An extremely large (25”), heavy carving of the goddess, HE XIAN GU, holding her signature branch and basket of lotus flowers. She was thought to be a Taoist nun during the Sung dynasty, and was revered for her beauty and ability to foretell the future. She is exquisitely rendered, with a beautiful face, and is wearing the classic Phoenix Bird headdress, a sign of Royalty or a celestial goddess. Lovely monochrome highlights will make this huge piece really stand out in any collection. No damage or apparent restorations. Pieces this size regularly sell at live auctions for over $3500, PLUS sales tax, + buyers premiums of 20% or more.

8-29. A lovely 27” elephant ivory elephant bridge. This is undoubtedly Chinese-carved, although there is a signature pad on the bottom that appears Japanese. The elephants are beautifully done each with trunks up, a sign of good luck. The piece is highly polished and displayed on its custom, wire-inlaid base, placing it in the 1940’s to 1950’s. In perfect condition, with no signs of restorations. These are considered lucky pieces, and you rarely see one this large or as well carved. One a half-foot smaller sold at auction for $2,200, + buyer’s premium.
